ABA Spring Meeting: Financing of the Energy Mix in a Changing World

27.07.2015

Energy partner Maximilian Uibeleisen participated as a speaker in a panel on the “Financing of the Energy Mix in a Changing World” at the American Bar Association (ABA) in Washington. In his presentation, after setting the scene by describing the current German energy mix and the main drivers towards a low-carbon economy, Max also explained the challenges the German energy turn currently faces.

One of these challenges is, of course, the financing of the further development of renewable energy sources and related infrastructure with an estimated investment need in Germany of around 350 billion euros until 2030 (60% share of RES). As one important aspect for financing, the current German Renewable Energies Act provides for a regulatory framework for guaranteed prices which is considered to be very stable.

Next to traditional sources of financing, Max also highlighted the current trend towards a decentralization and “democratization” of energy production, e.g. by way of “citizens’ wind farms”, green bonds and local energy cooperatives. Further panel speakers were Charles E. Di Leva from the World Bank, Antonia Aires from Brazilian law firm Demarest Advogados and Lori Bean, partner at Clifford Chance’s energy finance practice.
