Revision of the Nuclear Safety Directive

The Permanent Representatives Committee of the Council acknowledged the agreement on the revision of the Nuclear Safety Directive reached in the Working Party on Atomic Questions on 28 May. Key features of the new text are: 

- EU-wide safety objectives,
- strengthened independence of the national regulatory authorities,
- reinforced monitoring activities.

The Council has now to formally adopt the new Directive, which will enter into force on the twentieth day following its publication in the Official Journal of the EU. Then Member States will have three years to incorporate it into national legislation.
