Russia's Data Localization Law New Interpretations of the Authorities

14.07.2015
Russian data protection law is still a hot topic among the business community. The amendments to the Personal Data Law made in July 2014, better known as the Russian personal data localization law, created a new procedure restricting access to websites violating Russian laws on personal data and a requirement to store personal data of Russian citizens on servers located in Russia.

The authorities promised to provide clarifications to the new law; however, following the meeting with Roskomnadzor yesterday, it appears that there will be no official clarifications and businesses need to get themselves prepared before the effective date of the Law on 1 September 2015, based on the wording of the law and the verbal comments of Roscomnadzor. Please find attached the summary of the interpretations given by the authorities during the meeting.
