Sunday Shopping in Hungary
The "Sunday closing law" came into effect on March 15, 2015.
Since the law banning most retail stores from opening on Sunday was not acceptable to the majority of the population, the Hungarian government decided to quash the unpopular law it with effect as from April 16, 2016.
As part of this Government decision, two relevant legal measures were repealed and in the meantime the related parts of the Hungarian labour law have also been restored to the position applicable up to March 15, 2015.
From 17 April, 2016, all shops in Hungary are again allowed to open on Sundays.
Employers shall pay attention to the “work schedule” and the “payment of surcharge of Sunday work performance” of employees.
