Dr Sophia Schamberg is this year’s winner of the Bucerius Law School’s dissertation prize. Bucerius Law School has been awarding the prize since 2017. The prize is funded by Noerr and worth €5,000 this year.

Dr Schamberg’s dissertation on “Private autonomy as an argument in the German Federal Court of Justice’s case law” was supervised by Professor Anne Röthel, who holds the chair in civil law, European and private international law, and for whom Sophia worked as an academic assistant while writing her thesis. Dr Schamberg is currently working as an academic assistant in Professor Gerhard Wagner’s department at Berlin’s Humboldt University. She also prepares for her second state law examination at the Berlin Court of Appeal.

Dr Stephan Schulz, a partner in Noerr’s Hamburg office, presented her with the award at Bucerius Law School during the Academic Ceremony for the class of 2023. The laudation speech was delivered by Professor Christian Bumke, who was the second reviewer of her thesis.

Dr Schamberg’s outstanding dissertation demonstrates not only scholastic excellence and the ability to work independently at an academic level, but also the ability to organise oneself and a passion for long-term in-depth study of a complex topic, said Dr Schulz when presenting the award. He added, “These are qualifications and values to which we as a law firm are committed. That is why, by funding the dissertation prize, we hope to encourage young lawyers to pursue this path”.
