Noerr advises AEQUITA on acquisition of SABIC's European petrochemicals business

08.01.2026

A Noerr team led by Christoph Thiermann and Jan-Philipp Meier has advised AEQUITA on the acquisition of the European petrochemicals business from Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC).

The transaction comprises four production sites in Geleen (the Netherlands), Gelsenkirchen (Germany), Genk (Belgium) and Teesside (the UK), employing c. 1,900 people and generating USD 3.5 billion in revenues.

Together with the recently acquired olefins and polyolefins business from LyondellBasell (LYB), the acquisition supports the much-needed consolidation of the European Olefins & Polyolefins sector. Combined, the two businesses are expected to generate USD 7 billion in revenues.

A Noerr team led by Munich-based partner Christoph Thiermann also advised AEQUITA on the acquisition of LyondellBasell's olefin and polyolefin business.

The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

AEQUITA is a Munich-based industrial group which invests in special situations such as carve-outs, succession arrangements and transformations throughout Europe. The current portfolio generates over €10 billion in revenues.
